The Supreme Court has scrapped the bar on Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election and asked the Election Commission to arrange the polls by June 28.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, on Thursday revoked the HC order that stayed the GCC election for three months, reports UNB.
On Wednesday, the Appellate Division deferred until this morning the hearing on two appeals filed by two mayoral candidates – Hasan Uddin Sarkar of Awami League and Zahangir Alam of BNP – seeking elections to the Gazipur City Corporation.
The High Court stayed the elections on May 6 after hearing a writ filed by local Awami League activist ABM Azharul Islam Suraj, also the chairman of Shimulia union parishad of Savar, on the plea of anomalies in inclusion of some areas of Savar in Gazipur city.
The writ was filed over a gazette published by the government incorporating six moujas of Shimulia union of Savar upazila (South Boroibari, Domna, Shibrampur, West Panishail, South Panishail and Domnag) under Gazipur City Corporation on January 16, 2013 but according to law, the GCC was formed with Gazipur and Tongi municipalities.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations on March 31.
